If a person goes outside on a clear, moonless night in
the countryside, far from city lights, he or she will
be treated to a breathtaking sight. Above stretches a
velvet black canopy studded with thousands of pinpoints
of light, some bright and lustrous, others so
faint they are barely visible. Most of these, of course,
are stars like the Sun, except that they lie much farther
away than the huge gaseous ball whose light and
heat make life on Earth possible.
A few of the brighter points of light in the dark
canopy are planets in our own solar system, the
Sun’s family. But these few easily visible solid bodies,
each thousands of miles in diameter, are only the tip
of the iceberg, so to speak, of the material making up
the solar system. Lurking in the darkness among
them, usually invisible to unaided human eyes, are
billions of smaller objects. Some are no larger than
cars or houses, while others are five, ten, fifty, or a
hundred miles across. “Lost amid the stars,” writes
noted science historian Curtis Peebles, “there are
mountains in the sky. Some are worlds in their own
right, others are the irregular splinters of collisions
[that happened] ages ago.”

The concept of black holes consistently grips the
human imagination. Many strange and frightening
creatures and objects have been invented in
mythology and fiction, and modern scientists have
revealed a number of equally bizarre and disquieting
things in the natural world. But none of these quite
compares to the idea of the black hole—an object
whose gravitational pull is so great that even light
cannot escape it, and a place where most of the normal
laws of nature break down. In the words of
noted physicist Kip Thorne, one of the world’s leading
experts on black holes:
Of all the conceptions of the human mind,
from unicorns to gargoyles to the hydrogen
bomb, the most fantastic, perhaps, is the black
hole: a hole in space with a definite edge into
which anything can fall and out of which nothing
can escape, a hole with a gravitational force
so strong that even light is caught and held in
its grip, a hole that curves space and warps time.

This book does not represent a complete collection of the articles, addresses,
and pronouncements of Albert Einstein; it is a selection made with a definite
object– namely, to give a picture of a man. To-day this man is being drawn,
contrary to his own intention, into the whirlpool of political passions and
contemporary history. As a result, Einstein is experiencing the fate that so
many of the great men of history experienced: his character and opinions are
being exhibited to the world in an utterly distorted form.

To forestall this fate is the real object of this book. It meets a wish that has
constantly been expressed both by Einstein’s friends and by the wider public.
It contains work belonging to the most various dates– the article on “The
International of Science” dates from the year 1922, the address on “The
Principles of Scientific Research” from 1923, the “Letter to an Arab” from
1930–and the most various spheres, held together by the unity of the
personality which stands behind all these utterances. Albert Einstein believes
in humanity, in a peaceful world of mutual helpfulness, and in the high mission
of science. This book is intended as a plea for this belief at a time which
compels every one of us to overhaul his mental attitude and his ideas.

the trees you see in pictures are familiar for me (because I live in Kerman,Iran) .I’ve seen lots of them in my city ,they are really the same, but is the matter proved?
now some history notes:
Around 1891, the Southern Pacific Railroad Company constructed a new line between Tracy and Fresno. A watering tank and pump on that line was the beginning of Kerman, which was christened Collis in honor of the President of the road, Collis P. Huntington. The first inhabitant, the caretaker of the pump and tank, kept the tank full of water for the thirsty engines with their long and lumbering trains. After some months, he resigned his job, not because of the work, he said, but because it was too lonesome and he was tired of being a hermit. He said he never saw anyone but the train crews and they were always in too big a hurry to carry on a conversation.

As a speculative venture, the old and very rich Bank of California purchased a huge tract of land in every County of California. The arid, barren land around Kerman seemed to be a good venture, so that happened to be the allotment for Fresno County.

After the death of its promoter, the bank became insolvent and its property was liquidated. The property here attracted the attention of two Los Angeles capitalists, William G. Kerckoff and Jacob Mansar, who saw a chance to purchase a plentiful water supply from the newly constructed Enterprise Canal, which had its source in the Kings River. The men combined the first three letters of each of their names and christined the area “Kerman.”
And as I know name of my city originate from the word “Kariman”(Persian) which means Great Men! ,this proves that there’s no relationship.

So what’s the truth? If you know inform me.

Among shapers of contemporary thought—including Darwin, Marx, and Freud—Friedrich Nietzsche is perhaps the most mysterious and least understood. His aphorisms are widely quoted, but as both man and thinker he remains an enigmatic figure, “philosophizing with a hammer” and hurling unsettling challenges to some of our most cherished beliefs. This audio tapes provide a context within which we can better understand Nietzsche’s life and work. Taught by Robert C. Solomon and Kathleen M. Higgins
